This community-powered program puts books in the hands of those who might otherwise feel forgotten. Join us to hear about how this program - and others like it - have changed lives.

    Chanta Daniele (Clay), M.A., Fiction Writer, Writing Consultant is a Champaign native currently residing on Anna Maria Island on the gulf side of Florida, and is the head of a University Writing Studio. She is the mother of a 13 year old daughter and 6 year old pit-mix fur baby.
    elizaBeth Simpson (www.cooperativeconflict.org) studies the dynamics of collaboration, participation, social responsibility, and personal agency, especially as they intersect with cultural work. She is currently working on a rubric of anti-oppressive decision making, with emphasis on Theatre of the Oppressed. elizaBeth has been a facilitator and consultant for grassroots social justice organizations for over 22 years, and is also a performance and multimedia artist who specializes in collaborative projects with people who would not call themselves “creative.”
    Stephanie Posey: During my work as a youth development practitioner / advocate in Chicago I became interested in the spaces young people occupy outside of school and how those can provide positive identity development. I am currently a graduate student interested in ensuring that young people have access to spaces and information dedicated to their wants and needs.

    Ayan Harris attends Centennial High School and is one of the founders of the youth political organization Paign To Peace, which hit the streets of Champaign-Urbana during the uprising of spring of 2020. Ayan Harris and Paign To Peace will collaborate regularly with Sounds Like Community during the 2020-2021 SLC season. This Wednesday SLC will interview Ayan Harris and Paign To Peace, and then Ayan Harris will join the SLC curators ring with an interview of Drake Materre of BSFR.     Drake Materre attends the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where studies Science in Community Health.     Ibrahim (Bourema) Ouedraogo is the founder and director of Global Visual Media Studio. In his spare time Ibrahim is a guitar player and singer/songwriter extraordinaire. Trained in Burkina Faso, and now an established presence in the Champaign-Urbana community, his musical voice traverses many styles, languages, traditions. Ibrahim serves on the Board of Directors of the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, where he is co-founder of the video production unit VVAM! | Vision and Voice Amplified through Media! His work with VVAM! can be seen on the IMC YouTube Channel and on the IMC’s weekly UPTV show, Saturday nights at 8:30pm.

After his death, I utilized that skill and was appreciative that once again, writing had saved my life.

      "The Writers of Oya Program [pronounced "Oh yeah"] allows me to teach that skill to other girls who are fighting their own unnamed battles. It allows a safe judgement free space for girls to reflect on their struggles, write their fears, and release their anxieties about the challenges that they are facing.”

      Maurice Hayes is a writer, poet, spoken word artist and motivational speaker with a calling to empower people to take control of their lives and define themselves for themselves.

      40 Days of Peace and Community Building directs focused attention on cultivating trusting and positive relationships among community members, city officials, churches and neighbors.

      "We will take this synergy into High Hope Communities affected by the disproportionate distribution of resources and support. Our purpose is to Restore confidence, Education, Advocacy, Care and Hope (REACH) by expanding within neighborhoods the connections to and communications with resources available throughout the region.

      "Our Vision through collaborative effort is to promote the importance of peace, community engagement, and participation while encouraging the continued 40 Days of Peace and Community Building to sustain its focus beyond the initial 40 Days.     • Part I: Miriam Larson shares Irish, New England and old-time tunes on flute with layered backup on jaw harp. She’ll intersperse some favorite contemporary and traditional folk tunes by artists including Lhasa de Sela and John Prine.

    • Part II: Four local comedians will bravely experiment with virtual comedy. Farah, Tanya, Andrea and Annie, frequent performers at local Broad Comedy nights, will give the audience something to laugh about in these difficult times.

  • Thursday, April 2, 2020: featured singer-songwriter Emily McKown and members of the band Meadowhawk: fiddle/guitar duo Matt Turino and Claire Johnson. Donations for this show went to the Channing Murray's Bucket Brigade -- delivering essential groceries to extremely low-income families in Urbana who are recommended by Cunningham Township Supervisor’s Office. UPDATE: The show raised $200 dollars, according to the Channing Murray Foundation!
