Access IMC

Update 7/14/2023:

Given the amazing support and some hurdles that have raised the price of the project, we’ve decided to extend our ramp fundraiser to July 31st and raise our goal to $8,000. You can read more about the process of building our ramp here: https://www.ucimc.org/ramp_update

IMC is a public space where everyone should feel welcome. It’s been a long road towards a more accessible IMC and the ramp is just one piece of our work.

Where are we in the process?

We have worked with architect Andrew Fell to design a ramp to our lower level! You can see the design drawing above and we hope you'll walk by this location on Elm Street to imagine what our ramp will be like. We are now in the process of scheduling a contractor and plan to build the ramp this year, with construction happening tentatively in August or September.

Who is funding the ramp?

We are grateful for a state grant to fund more than $100,000 of the construction costs. However, we need your help to get across the finish line! We are looking to raise $6,000 from our community before July 15th.

What happens in the lower level of the IMC?

We want all participants to be able to access the awesome activities in the lower level! Two of our working groups operate out of the lower level: Makerspace Urbana and UC Books to Prisoners. We also rent to several artists, musicians, and the the Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign!

What are we doing to make IMC more accessible beyond the ramp?

We are working to build a culture of accessibility at the IMC. We are grateful to our members who are shaping this work. As a result of your feedback we are: ensuring doors are unlocked before meetings, planning to build a sound-proofed meeting space, including access details in our advertising, and providing a contact point for accessibility - [email protected].
