Champaign County Board Meeting To Discuss Tasers With Sheriff Dan Walsh
Calling all citizens!!!
This Monday, February 5 at 7 p.m.
Champaign-Urbana Citizens for Peace and Justice is calling all citizens to come to the Champaign County Board meeting at Brookens Institute, located at Washington and Lierman.
Sheriff Dan Walsh will be reporting to the County Board Justice Committee about the use of Tasers in the Champaign County jail. This comes after many incidents of death and reported abuses in the County jail. In 2004, three suicides occurred in the jail within six months. Two more deaths have occurred, coming to a total of five deaths in two years.
Concern has also arisen since Sgt. William Alan Myers was fired in November 2005 for illegally using a Taser on an inmate. It came to light that Myers had abused a total of four inmates with a Taser, some of them while in a restraint chair and with a hood over their head. Myers is currently being prosecuted, but has been offered a plea bargain with no time served.
We need concerned citizens to speak to the County Board during the time for public comment, which begins at 7 p.m. We also need warm bodies who are willing to show their support by attending the meeting.
For more information see the attached questions delivered to the County Board on Jan. 8, 2007 and read the article “No Bodily Harm: Another Continuance for Sgt. Myers” at ucimc.org.
