Another Death In Custody In Champaign County
The News-Gazette reported another death in police custody in Champaign County Friday evening. After a fight in Rantoul, Rantoul police arrested one of those involved and transported them to the Champaign County Jail. It was there that the person was discovered unresponsive. An ambulance was called, the person was transported to Carle, but attempts to revive the person were unsuccessful.
It is unclear from the article when the deceased person began exhibiting signs of a health crisis during the transport. Rantoul is about a 15 minute drive at normal speeds north of Urbana, where the jail is located. The route would've taken the transporting police car within a quarter mile of Carle enroute to the jail, so continuing the transport, then calling an ambulance to transport the victim from the jail delayed proper treatment and could have contributed to the death. While concerns about securing the prisoner could have been a factor, the Rantoul officer could have called foer back-up from Urbana or other police officers to meet him at the Carle emergency room.
Hour and a half
Police responded to the call at 7:40 pm and Darren Wilson was pronounced dead at Carle at 9:11 pm.

Sad, Same Old Story
I rather suspect that someone could pass out in an alley somewhere in Champaign County and have a citizen discover them, call for an ambulance via 911, and get medical assistance faster than if they need medical assistance while in police custody.
Wasn't there some saying by a famous writer about how you could tell something about the values of a society by how they treated those who were old and those in prison? Regrettably, I think it says a lot about where we live.
