United For Uganda Hip Hop Benefit
The local student group United For Uganda (www.unitedforuganda.org) recently held a hip hop benefit show at the Independent Media Center to raise money for Come Let's Dance (www.comeletsdance.org), a grassroots organization in northern Uganda working with former child soldiers to recover from forced combat and with the surrounding impoverished areas to empower them to rebuild their community after Uganda's brutal 20-year-long civil war between the government and the LRA. The show featured local rappers Krukid, Cornbread, and Text with the Sugargliders as well as the local breakdancing group Floor Lovers Illinois. United For Uganda raised about $400 with this show, and has raised around $1600 so far this year for Come Let's Dance.
